The success of tourism industry integrates with supporting components including each facilities. Hospitality business is one of the supporting components. In parallel with tourism development in Bali, the constructions of hotels also grow rapidly. Many hotels in Bali developed not only by local investors but also foreign investors. This is the reason why there are many hotels with international management and operator scatter in Bali.
Based on observation result and secondary data, Bali has about 23 of 4 star hotels and 33 of 5 star hotels. Hotels a re spread over in some locations or region in Bali. As seen on the chart above, most of hotels were concentrated in Bandung Regency, especially 4 and 5 star hotels. High tourism potency in Badung regency is resulted from numerous famous tourism area namely Kuta, Nusa Dua – Tanjung Benoa, Jimbaran – Pecatu and Canggu. There are about 18 of 4 star hotels and 23 of 5 star hotels in Badung at the moment.
Multidimensional crisis which hit Indonesia since mid 1997 has influenced many economic sectors including tourism sector. The effect to hotel supply in Bali is very obvious. Since crisis began, there has been no new supply for 4 and 5 star hotels except 46 rooms at 5 star hotel in 1998. Until 2003, room supply of 5 star hotel was 7,854 rooms and 3,602 rooms for 4 star hotels.

Hotel sector as part of tourism industry is very sensitive to security condition. Reliability of foreign tourist exists if only national security is stable. Since the multidimensional crisis happened, some serials insecure conditions spread out in Indonesia including Bali (e.g. Kuta bomb, Riot of Mei 13, 1998, Separation terrorist in Ambon and Papua). The image of Indonesia, including Bali, has fallen down. Indonesia has been considered as insecure tourist destination.
Room demand of 4 and 5 star hotels, however, slowly recovered together with the return of foreign tourist reliability. For instance, room demand of 5 star hotels after the drop in 1999 at 4,846 rooms rose to 5,621 rooms in 1999. In 4 star hotels from 1,424 rooms in 1999 rose to 1,742 rooms in 2000.
